More than 50 environmental organizations - European, international and Indonesian - sign statement in support of Terra! Among the signatures are groups such as Greenpeace International, Friends of the Earth International, Rainforest Action Network, Forest Ethics and many others. "Campaigns against large corporations can be risky - especially for smaller NGOs this can be associated with substantial financial risks”, says Daniel Hausknost, coordinator of the European Environmental Paper Network (EEPN), an umbrella organization representing 53 environmental organizations across Europe, which promoted the call for solidarity for Terra! “The Terra! activists have done a great job and now they need our support. We regard Pigna's attack on Terra! to be an attack on all of us working for a sustainable environment. The environmental movement must continue to refuse any gagging orders by the industry", he concluded. Instead of admitting the problem and demonstrating corporate accountability and cleaning up its production, Cartiere Pigna sought charges against Terra! in a suit for damages to its corporate reputation. In court Terra! proved both that Pigna is a customer of APP, submitting the details of trade invoices - and that Pigna's products contain fibres coming from tropical deforestation (mixed tropical hardwood) and from plantations related to deforestation (acacia), according to paper fibre tests carried out by the independent fibre testing company IPS Testing. Despite this, Terra! was convicted for damaging Pigna's brand name, and was sentenced to pay EUR 20,000 plus expenses, thereby putting the association at risk of closure. Terra! ha fatto analizzare dei quaderni della Pigna dalla IPS Testing, un laboratorio statunitense specializzato nell'analisi delle fibre di carta. Il campione di quattro quaderni "Pigna Monocromo" a copertina riginda (due quaderni e due quadernoni) è risultato contenere alte percentuali di acacia (tra il 62 e il 74%). L'espansione delle piantagioni di acacia e di olio di palma è la principale causa della distruzione delle foreste pluviali dell'Indonesia, che ha portato Indonesia al terzo posto nella classifica mondiale delle emissioni di carbonio, dopo Cina e Statu Uniti. Nei quaderni sono state anche rilevate importanti percentuali di latifoglie miste tropicali (MTH), ossia foresta pluviale trasformata in trucioli e quindi in carta, con tutte le sue diverse specie, alcune delle quali preziosissime. Tra le fibre rilevate, alcune hanno l'aspetto delle dipterocarpacee (Dipterocarpus spp.) e altre delle Myristicaceae. Si tratta di piante che crescono solo nelle foreste pluviali, e ne fanno parte molte specie minaccate (inserite nella Lista Rossa dell'IUCN). |

Terra! sent some Pigna exercise books to the independent fibres IPS Testing lab . In the sample of four Pigna Monocromo hard cover exercise books, a high percentage of acacia (between 62 and 74%) was found. Conversion of natural forests to pulp and palm oil plantations is the main factor of tropical deforestation and peatland destruction in Indonesia, which has made this country the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. |

Fermate la deforestazione! Questo l'appello lanciato dalle tre associazioni ambientaliste in una lettera inviata a piĂą di cento aziende italiane del settore cartario italiano. Non solo i produttori di carta come Burgo e Pigna ma anche grandi acquirenti di carta quali gli editori come Mondadori, Rizzoli e Rusconi e aziende dell'agroalimentare che consumano milioni di tonnellate di carta per il packaging dei propri prodotti come Ferrero e Barilla. |
